[OKGIS] Barren Fork or Baron Fork?

That's consistent with what's on the USGS quad maps; so we know what the
USGS thinks. The problem is more than half the web-site references to
it spell it Barren, and the OK Scenic River Commission also spells it
Barren (Baron) (sic) on their web site, with the preference for Barren.
I would prefer to use the original name, if possible. However, since so
many of the original documents from the 1890's show that the confusion
was well-established, even then, we may have to go back even further.
I will contact Wayne Furr OK's representative to the GNIS and see if he
knows what evidence the USGS has for it's position.

Subject: Re: [OKGIS] Barren Fork or Baron Fork?
The USGS' GNIS tool (Geographic Names Information System) has it as
"Baron Fork"--

NO:::
This tool doesn't have any "Barren Fork" in it.

Hi Folks,
I just did a new delineation of the Scenic Rivers Watershed and
am attributing the data, and have again come up against the question of
the correct spelling of Baron/Barren Fork Creek.
Here's the problem. The Oklahoma Scenic Rivers legislation
spells it Barren Fork, but the USGS quad maps have Baron Fork. There is
a town called Baron close to it, as well, so it may have been named
after that. However, when I Google "Baron Fork Creek Oklahoma" I get
88,000 hits; whereas, when I Google "Barren Fork Creek Oklahoma" I get
98,000 hits. It appears that both terms are in equally common use,
although possibly Baron Fork may have been the original spelling.
Does anyone have any insight or knowledge that might help us
resolve this issue this issue?
