I just examined the hand-written notes from the 1897 GLO Survey. It shows
the community of Baron as having a "small station". In the summary of the
township, it describes the railroad station at Baron, and says that the
community has a population of about 50 people. Throughout the survey
notes, where they crossed the watercourse, 7 or 8 times, the spelling is
"Barren". However, it is apparent in each instance of the word that it
had been "gone over again with the pen". That is, it was originally
written as "Baron" and then later changed to "Barren". This confirms that
there was some confusion about the name of the watercourse, presumably due
to the similarly named community.-------------- next part --------------
