Here at the health dept. we have contracted several times with DOC to do data entry for non-confidential survey results. It is very cost-effective and they do a great job of data entry - very accurate...would be a great resource for GIS data if the training is available for them.

I used to work for an engineering consulting firm in Florida and we contracted with a water district (Southwest Florida Water Management District) that obtained GIS data from a contractor in a prison system. As it allegedly worked, the prisoners digitized spot elevations and contours from topo maps and we in turn used this data to develop pre-condition hydraulic/hydrologic models. We took those terrain/elevation models and only had to do updates for the developed areas, which saved us tons of time, and in turn dollars. I think teaching these types of skills could be extremely beneficial to some GIS entrepreneur out there. The data was good and I imagine it was pretty cheap. Imagine all the types of data that need to be developed and that no one has the staff or resources to perform! I cant' think of many better ways to repay your debt to society and learn a valuable skill in today's marketplace. Something for everyone to think about...

I think it would be very commendable of you to do this for the prison population. I had the opportunity to assist in teaching Autocad to some women prisoners one time. It was rewarding to see how it made these women feel. I have not kept up on just how many of them continued on to work in the field but I would hope that a few did.
I think that any breaks they may be able to get gives them just one more chance to change their way of life.

Hi everybody,
I teach GIS courses at a Community College and have been asked to offer courses at our local state prison. I would like this communities' advice and input on this idea.
Thanks,
