Subject: U.S. RELEASES PLAN FOR NATIONAL LAND IMAGING PROGRAM
Dear ASPRS Member,
The long awaited report on the National Land Imaging Program, developed
by the Future of Land Imaging (FLI) Interagency Work Group, was released
by the White House late yesterday. The full text of the report and
related press release is available at http://www.ostp.gov/ (see OSTP
News item 8-14).
ASPRS has advocated strongly for this issue over the past several years,
and made a major contribution to the report through the geospatial
community survey conducted during the summer of 2006. Many of you
likely participated in that survey, developed under the leadership of
President-elect Kass Green and Past-president Don Lauer. The results of
that survey have been included in the government report as Exhibit 9.
While we are still digesting the 100-plus pages of the report, it
appears to address the majority of issues which ASPRS has previously
raised on this subject. Now the hard part begins--implementing the
vision as outlined, in a timely manner, will be a
challenge--particularly with so many distractions facing the current
Administration. We will need to work together as a community to keep
the focus on this important effort, and will keep our membership
informed as that process begins.
This effort is an excellent example of what our collective advocacy can
achieve. We are convinced that ASPRS' continued support for U.S.
leadership in moderate-resolution land imaging has been, and continues
to be, important in maintaining visibility and focus on these issues.
We will maintain the focus moving forward.
