Thanks for all the responses. The data was in access. However I joined
it and used some capability "I" don't have in access.
After the join and export I was able to calculate the eight fields in
question to new fields set as short integer. this provided a stripping
of any text values and allowed accurate sorting of each. then by
working through several iterations of sorting I was able to use the
select in the attribute table and just calculate each column to the
correct one, calculating the extracted data to 0 after using it so I
could finally whittle down my sorts. It took almost as long to write
this email. Even though I was using approx 22k records.
It is all done now. I guess I'll try to learn what I need to know
before that happens to me again.
