David,
You can test the unit to see if it is in fact putting out the NEMA GPS
sentences by plugging the serial cable into your computer running WinXP,
go to Program- Accessories/Communications/HyperTerminal setup a
connection with the same parameters as on the Geo. You should see the
GPS sentences roll across the screen. You do not need a GPS fix to do
this.

Subject: [OKGIS] NMEA Output from GeoExplorer
I'm trying to get NMEA output from older model Trimble GeoExplorer
(Model I & II) GPS units. What I'm trying to do is get them to work
with an ArcReader extension that's supposed to be able to read from the
COM1 port on a computer and show the output on a laptop without having
to buy any expensive software. However, when I connect the GPS unit to
the laptop and test it, the extension says it can't detect the GPS unit.
I don't have a way to tell if it's the GPS unit or something on the
computer.
I've configured the GPS unit by going to the Configuration >
Communication > Port A page and selecting NMEA. Also, I verified that
the GPS had a solid fix before testing. Is there anything else that
needs to be done to tell the GPS unit to send the data aside from
configuring the port?
Have any of you tried this with one of these units before? This may be
going back a way.
Thanks,
David
