I would add one cautionary note-if you have other layers/shapefiles that
you are also showing on the map at the same time you need to be very
careful about defining coordinate systems/projections. If not you may
wind up with your highways and roadways in Oklahoma, but your oilwells
in East Egypt somewhere.

KC,
Try these steps.
* If you haven't done this, first add the data as a table. I
typically add it as a dbase IV table although this functionality is
going away.
* After you've added the table, go to the Source tab (bottom),
right click and choose add x-y data; designate the correct columns to
spatially locate the information.
To create the attribute table, I recommend using the standard developed
by PPDM at http://www.ppdm.org/. You will need to join the standards
organization in order to receive the data model. The data model will
tell you what data is needed in what format. It will also provide you
with appropriate constraints and relationships between different tables.

Are you wanting to create a point shapefile out of the coordinate data
from a spreadsheet? ...sounds like you want to "Add XY Data" in
ArcMap...
p.s. One thing you will want to look very closely at is the actual
number of well records you are trying to put in an Excel spreadsheet. I
can't remember right of the top of my head, but from what I can remember
you are approaching the record limit for an Excel spreadsheet!

OK, at this point I'm not quite sure what I'm trying to do yet, or at
least what it's called in order to look up instructions on how to do it.
I have exported a spreadsheet from Petra with my wells information in it
and I have it in Excel format (around 65,000 wells). It has 18 columns
in it, 2 of which are x y coordinates and 2 of which are lat long
coordinates. I am trying to somehow "join" or "connect" or somehow maybe
create an attribute table or something that also can read and show a
point in ArcMap for at least one set of those 2 coordinate types and be
able to choose what other columns are to be displayed on the map. What
am I trying to do? What is it called, and do you have any suggestions
that may help?
Thanks.........
