WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
This workshop is sponsored by the National States Geographic Information Council through a contract with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security which has a keen interest in maintaining an accurate and up-to-date inventory of the geospatial data produced by local, regional, state and tribal governments. Geospatial data are critical for the planning, mitigation, preparation, response, and recovery operations associated with any natural or manmade disaster. Today, only 25% of state and local governments inventory their geospatial data and policies in a systematic manner and many of these agencies do not effectively share this information or keep it up-to-date.
The GIS Inventory was developed by the National States Geographic Information Council to track the status of GIS in state and local government to aid the planning and building of Spatial Data Infrastructures. The GIS Inventory is designed to work in concert with Geospatial One Stop Portal (www.geodata.gov). It also interfaces with FEMA's Mapping Information Platform (MIP) that manages the production of the digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps (DFIRMs), and other federal programs where partnership opportunities exist for data production on imagery and elevation products.
Completing a profile in the GIS Inventory takes less than ½ hour and documenting each of your individual data layers takes less than 2 minutes. By investing this time, you provide critical information on your data to emergency workers that serve you, your family and your community, as well as the rest of the geospatial community that depends on data access. Please see the attached testimonial and state worksheet for more info.
During this workshop, you will learn about the user system interface, administrator panel and how the GIS Inventory is used to connect you to important government programs.
