OU Studies Poverty in Oklahoma Schools:  Hiring VISTA Researchers

 

 

The University of Oklahoma has announced that it will expand its examination of poverty in Oklahoma schools.  The Office of the Vice Provost at the University of Oklahoma plans to hire two VISTA research assistants to study the relationship between schools and community poverty in rural and urban areas of Oklahoma.  The research aims to identify Oklahoma schools that are having an impact on poverty.  The VISTA researchers will apply state-of-the-art community mapping software and will make use of a variety of state and non-profit resources.  The VISTA researchers should have some proficiency in Spanish.  Some college experience is needed and a bachelor’s degree is preferred.

Learn GIS While Fighting Poverty in Rural and Urban Oklahoma

Office of the Vice Provost Seeks to Fill Two VISTA Positions

 

Many know that schools are reflections of the communities they serve, but have you ever wondered about the transforming power of schools on communities? 

 

The Office of the Vice Provost at the University of Oklahoma seeks two VISTA members to serve as research assistants in a study of the relationship between schools and community poverty in rural and urban areas of Oklahoma.  The study seeks to alleviate poverty by identifying schools and their characteristics that have served as change agents in low-income communities. The volunteer will work in a state of the art social research facility housed on the research campus of a flagship institution for higher learning. 

 

The successful candidate will conduct community mapping using GIS software and a variety of state and non-profit resources.  The candidate will also work in partnership with other VISTA(s) to develop a database of service-learning activity on campus.  Prior experience with GIS and tracking databases is not necessary to the position.  However, candidates should be comfortable with technology and must be willing to become proficient in a variety of research methods using GIS, electronic databases and other research technologies.  The successful candidate must be able to take initiative and work independently with support.  A bachelor’s degree is preferred.  All applicants must have an appreciation for the complexities of schooling and poverty issues.  The successful candidate is flexible, always keeping the big-picture in view.  Some proficiency in Spanish would also be helpful to the position. 

 

The successful candidate must apply to Americorps for the VISTA program (https://recruit.cns.gov/applyform.asp) and be available for a January 29, 2008 – February 1, or February 19 – 22, 2008 Pre-service Orientation Training in AlbuquerqueVISTA is a twelve-month, full time commitment.  VISTA member base salary is $833/month, including benefits paid by the CNCS. A modest allowance of $300 will be paid to the housing vendor selected by the VISTA.   VISTA members may select the Education Award of $4,725 or the Completion Year of Service Cash Award of $1,200 after successful completion of service.
