Job Description:


The Oklahoma Archeological Survey seeks a staff-level position to assist with the development of our Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Site File Digitization project.  This position will perform several critical duties for the project, including the following: assist with data entry; provide oversight of three part-time graduate student research assistants; monitor data entry and project development daily; assist in training graduate students and other OAS staff on data entry and use of the GIS project; identify and troubleshoot issues as needed; coordinate with Center for Spatial Analysis staff on more difficult or technical issues; and provide regular updates to the PI and co-PI about project developments.




REQUIRED ATTACHMENTS: Resume and Cover Letter (RELEVANT box must be checked)


Required Education: Bachelor’s degree in natural sciences, geography, anthropology or closely related field OR an equivalent combination of education/job related experience, AND

  • 24 months geographic information systems (GIS) experience


  • Ability to gather, analyze, and integrate non-digital (paper maps) and digital spatial data and determine how best the information can be displayed using GIS;
  • Ability to provide training to junior GIS staff and lead tasks to completion;
  • Extensive knowledge of GIS processes and techniques;
  • Experience in GIS data development, maintenance, analysis and cartographic processes.
  • Experience coordinating, implementing and maintaining relational geographic databases;

Departmental Preferences:

  • Familiarity with GIS applications in archaeology or other environmental field;
  • Experience preparing metadata and other documentation;
  • Experience in assessing geospatial and ancillary data quality, and in developing/implementing QA/QC procedures;
  • Experience in digitizing non-digital data from paper maps;
  • Experience in project management, implementation and establishing workflows
  • Experience using FileMaker Pro software;
  • Experience using ESRI ArcGIS, ArcGIS Extensions and model builder, and extensions;
  • Knowledge of the geography of Oklahoma, including geology, topography, hydrology, and/or biotic districts;
